After seeing our GM situation addressed, I couldn't help but see the parallels between our reaction and the nation's reaction during election season. With an incumbent who boasts an underwhelming approval rating (around 27% in a Pensburgh poll), many of us (I'm in the 27%) wanted him removed from office. Now that we know Jim Rutherford will be replacing him, it seems as though the majority of us would probably rather have Shero instead. In politics, this happens all the time, but with a different process. In our case, the incumbent was impeached (fired), while in politics, the incumbent needs to be selected as a less desirable option than a seemingly better alternative.
There have been many public figures with a poor approval rating who have kept their office due to a lack of a candidate widely perceived to be a suitable replacement. Heck, it wasn't too long ago where a vast majority (if not everybody) of congressmen kept their positions despite an 11% approval rating for congress as a whole. I'm not writing here to convince you that Shero was our best option, as I have done that numerous times since our season ended. Instead, I am offering everybody a hypothetical ballot and the discussion section below. In this ballot, I want you to pretend that you were given the opportunity to vote in the hypothetical 2014-2015 Penguins GM election (before Shero was fired, so the awkwardness of bringing him back is not a factor).
- This is not a political discussion thread. The political theme is here to serve as an alternative way of thinking about our GM position.
- If you are going to choose the write in option, leave a comment with your candidate's name. Keep in mind, your candidate should be one who we can reasonably get. A guy like Ken Holland or Dean Lombardi would not be a good write in, as it is extremely unlikely that we would be able to steal them from their current team. Also, if somebody else has written in the same candidate as you, rec their comment. If a write in option receives a lot of support, I may re-do this fanpost with that candidate included in the next poll.
