This Day in Hockey

Hey folks, here is another installment for your hockey history cravings.

1938- The Montreal Maroons disbanded after going 12-30-6 in hopes of relocating to a new city because some other hockey club called the Canadiens were drawing too much of a crowd. They were also pretty decent. The league finally agreed to the let the Maroons disband, with hopes of only taking a year off, but they would never return to the NHL, finally closing the doors on the franchise in 1947.

**Update 12 hours later: I know why I put this up and thought it was worth mentioning. There have been recent talks of adding a second hockey team in Toronto, which I don't fully understand or support. Sure the city may be able to support a second professional hockey team culturally and financially, but half of the fans in the are aren't going to simply say "Ok, well, I'll be a Toronto _______ fan now." Doesn't happen that way. Could be a very dangerous decision if the NHL actually went through with it.

1962- A new class of Hall of Famers. Punch Broadbent, Harry Hyland, Fred "Steamer" Maxwell, Reg Noble, Sweeney Schriner, Alf Smith and Nels Stewart. The only Pittsburgh connection is Alf Smith, who played for the Pittsburgh Duquesne and the Pittsburgh Bankers in 1909.

1977- Grab your coffee and donut because this was delicious Hall of Fame Class: Tim Horton (get the openings line now?), Alex Delvecchio who played a long ass time with the Red Wings, Harold Ballard, Joseph Cattarinch and John "Bunny" Ahearne, with the last three inducted as builders. Horton, though, played with the Pittsburgh Hornets from 1949-1951, again from '51-'52 after a brief four games with the Maple Leafs. Timmy would come back to Pittsburgh during the 1971-1972 season to play 44 games for the Penguins. I had no idea he played for any Pittsburgh team and now strongly believe there should be more Tim Horton's restaurants in Allegheny County.
