This Day in Hockey History- Happy Birthday Andy!

Augst 28, 1932- As Empty Netters wrote about here (watch the video, the music is amazing) today is Andy Bathgate's birthday. The Hall of Famer turns 82, and though most of his career was spent with teams other than the Penguins, he was still a big contributor to the team as well as to hockey. Most notably, Bathgate should be given percentages of goalies earnings because he was the one who hit Jacques Plante in the face with a shot, prompting Plante to receive stitches and return to the game wearing a mask. He was also one of the first players to speak out against the "old-time hockey" mantra of players aiming to hurt one another on purpose; he even called out one of his own teammates and had an articles published on the subject.

150 games with 103 points wearing a Penguins uniform, Happy Birthday Andy!

1965- Hall of Fame Class: Marty Barry, Clint Benedict, Arthur Farrel, Red Horner, Syd Howe, Jack Marshall, Bill Mosienko, Blair Russel, Ernie Russell, Fred Scanlan, and builders Foster Hewitt & Tommy Lockhart.

1970- This is an interesting fact. Billy Taylor and Don Gallinger are reinstated to the NHL after being suspended for 22 years for gambling. 22 years is, safe to say, the longest suspensions in NHL history. The two were betting against their own team using insider information, such as injuries and their own playing performances. Taylor was the main culprit, as he got into Gallinger's head and convinced him to come along for the ride, saying he could make more money by betting on his own teams. Maybe Pete Rose should have played hockey.

1975- Another HOF class: Glenn Hall, Pierre Pilote, George Armstrong, Gordie Drillon, "Ace" Bailey, and Bill Jennings.
