Nice win. Ugly game.

The Pittsburgh Penguins looked pretty stale on defense tonight, allowing the Thrashers to amass a 12 shot third period that came within inches of changing the tides of the game. If not for the crossbar behind Dany Sabourin, it's likely Jason Williams would've given the Thrashers a 3-2 third period lead.

But iImanaged a power-play goal to snap their 0-for-3 scoreless trek with the man advantage.

Sidney Crosby dished an assist on the first goal by Miroslav Satan in the first period, later adding another helper on a shot that was redirected for the game winner by Petr Sykora. But it was the second period goal that Pensburgh users Dayna and Angela MC labeled "flashy" that will no doubt make an appearance on every hockey highlights package for months to come. Sliding down, nearly on his back, Crosby sent a Tyler Kennedy goal home for his seventh of the year.

Dany Sabourin played a phenomenal game in net. He stopped Ilya Kovalchuk point blank on a breakaway, followed it up later with two or three more similar saves on two other Thrashers that saved the Penguins power play from looking like a flashback fto the Flyers game earlier this month.

And who knows? Maybe there's some bad blood developing between these two teams. If Kovalchuk and Crosby don't already have some, there's a good chance some tension is brewing between Colby Armstrong and Eric Godard. If not for a mandatory line change it's likely the two would've dropped mitts. There's more a chance that Atlanta's Todd White and Kris Letang will have something rearing to go on December 18 when the teams meet again, but White will have to get his head screwed on right before that can happen.

The good: Crosby's three-point night

The bad: Not knowing whether to cheer or sob when the Pens' power play is on the ice.

The ugly: Kris Letang's hit on Todd White. Brought back memories of Dary Tucker on Sami Kapanen.

Next game: Saturday matinee, 2:00 against the Canucks

Scouting the Enemy: Atlanta Thrashers

Record: 7-8-2

Leading scorers: Bryan Little (9G, 8A, 17pts), Vyacheslav Kozlov (10G, 6A, 16pts), Ilya Kovalchuk (6G, 10A, 16pts)

Blogs: DO THE THRASHERS HAVE LARGE TALONS?

For some reason the Thrashers still think Will Farrell's movie Anchorman is a good way to present keys to the game. Various players dress up and pretend to host a pre-game show. It's kinda dated.

But onto the scouting report...

Ilya Kovalchuk is just diesel when it comes to playing the Pens. There's no other way of saying it. Over 23 career appearances against Pittsburgh, Kovi 17 goal and 13 assists. That's 30 points over 23 games. Impressive. Heading into this game he's amassed 10 points over six games, so don't think he'll require any less attention than he deserves.

Kari Lehtonen hasn't done much for the Thrashers this season. Much like last year, Lehtonen is working his way through injuries early in the year. His back stiffed up on him earlier in the season, followed by a bout with what many said was the flu. He's yet to return and it's more than likely Johan Hedberg (3-3) will start between the pipes.

Finally, tonight is also a chance to catch a glimpse of the former Penguins Erik Christensen and Colby Armstrong. Colby earned the alternate captain title for this season and has since posted a mild seven point start (2G, 5A). Christensen is also off to a (typical) slow start with eight points (1G, 7A).

Dear John Shipley, Never step on the Pittsburgh Penguins logo

So I’m in the Penguins locker room, which is about the size of a port-a-potty, and get chastised for stepping on the logo in the carpet.

Some equipment guy or PR flak comes up to me and says, “Can you please not step on the Penguin?”

Well, if it’s alive I’ll try not to step on the penguin. Or was some symbol representing something more important than a sports team.

    Are you kidding me? Wow.

His name is John Shipley, and he stepped on THE logo.

It's been said before but I'll say it again - hockey is a sport founded on tradition. Players and teams take it to heart. That's just how it goes and any writer should know that. Maybe there's a sign on the way to the concourse that all players tap on the way out to the ice. Something like, "It's a great day for hockey" or "Play like champions today." A glove tap on the way out, no matter the actual significance, flicks the switch from "game off" to "game on."

Well in the Penguins locker room (or as John Shipley would put it, "port-a-potty") there's a tradition that all players, personnel and (I thought) writers upheld. Never step on the logo. It's not so hard. Frankly you have more than enough landscape around the logo to avoid the thing. A lot of teams respect this even in their own port-a-potties. You can't tell me the Penguins are the first team you've encountered that have asked you to kindly remove your feet from their logo.

I can't guarantee it, but I'm pretty sure Rob Rossi or Joe Starkey wouldn't step on your logo. At the least they'd show a little respect and not label your locker room a port-a-potty. But whatever. Such is the superiority complex of a writer for a team that hails from "The State of Hockey."

Sorry the symbol that represents the sports team is held in higher regard than your own. We're sorry the Penguins' logo with a definitive Penguin ON the logo is held in higher regard than...whatever that thing is on yours. A bear? It's as if the person who created the Minnesota logo thought to themselves, "You know what would be REALLY Wild? If we took the head of some kind of animal and fit as much crap into the logo as possible. And we'll throw a stupid North Star in there as well to pay homage to the team that didn't survive here the first time."

John, you get one blessing. Everyone gets one. But please show a little respect next time.

Stick tap to Hockey Wilderness for this one...

Marc-Andre Fleury day-to-day, likely out for Thrashers game

I've read rumblings of a knee injury. In fact, even that was vague beyond vagueness. I feel the term "(knee)" labeled next to his name on sports line sites is just a generic way of labeling a lower-body injury. Besides, Michel Therrien has said is nothing too serious and Fleury could technically play if needed.

But you know what? Dany Sabourin is fine. At 3-1-1 he's about as good a backup as you can get. His only regulation loss came to the San Jose Sharks, a 2-1 offensive drought that came with an overall rough road trip late last month. In a perfect world he'd have a 5-0 record, but you can't focus on the shoulda, woulda, couldas. I'm content with his current record and more than willing to see him in net tomorrow night against the Atlanta Thrashers.

John Curry got the call up from Wilkes Barre-Scranton to suit up for his first NHL game last night against the Wild. It's likely he'll remain with the team tomorrow night in Atlanta, although highly unlikely he'll earn a start during his short time up. Either way, should we see Curry in the future, at least he has a chance to chill the nerves a bit. If you remember last year's story of Connor James flying into Long Island and landing late, then Curry's story of a slow drive in the snow might have a similar tone to it.

Tales of the Tape: Minnesota 11-18, Jordan Staal vs. Erik Reitz

I've been under the weather as of late, so I didn't tune in for yesterday's game, but of course I knew I had to check for fight penalties - keep the Pensburgh crew happy. When I spotted one (finally - they've been behaving themselves as of late) this weird little word was sitting next to it: "Staal". I refreshed my page to make sure it was correct.

I've seen better fights than this little number that broke out early in the second period, but keep in mind that this has doubled Jordan Staal's NHL fight total. Sure, that may not be impressive if you consider that his earlier fight number was 1 - imagine if Eric Godard doubled his fight total in a single game.

This one's short and sweet, but our boy really took it to Erik Reitz. After a little bit of dancing, Staal starts unloading on Reitz's head before overshooting and losing his balance, to which Reitz tries to take advantage as the linesmen come in. It was a strong showing from a non-fighter, and it gives Staal the win in my column.

Nicklas Backstrom holds off Pens, Wild win 2-1 in shootout

Check out the Wild perspective at Hockey Wilderness

Let is be said here and now - Nicklas Backstrom is an incredible goaltender. Whatever term you use to label the Minnesota Wilds' 'system' doesn't negate the fact that it works effectively and it works for him.

And to think - if it weren't for Michael Zigomanis' choppy face-off win in the first that took a Wild bounce past Sabourin, this would've been a 1-0 Penguins win and Sabu's first shutout of the year.

But whose making excuses? It's not like we're Flyers fans. Real teams come back to even the score and that's exactly what the Penguins did 10 seconds later. The stalemate carried both teams to overtime, followed by the subsequent shootout.

On paper the game can easily appear as a boring end-to-end match. Scoring chances were minimal but that's what made the intensity level so much higher. Minnesota plays a very disciplined, defensive game that cancels out the Penguins' offensive onslaught. On the other hand, Minnesota's D was pressured effectively by the Pens all night but were obviously up to the task.

Unfortunately a lot of things came to an end tonight. Evgeni Malkin was held pointless on the night, thus bringing his 13 game streak to its untimely end. The Penguins' six game win streak also came to an end, but their point streak is still alive. 13 points over seven games, 6-0-1 for the month of November. I don't know about you, but I can live with that.

And hey, even Jordan Staal dropped the mitts for only the second or third time in his career. Dunman will no doubt have something on that later, although I'll tell you now it's not Laraque/Godard quality.

In the end there's no denying both teams earned their point, but Minnesota just barely edged out over the Pens for the extra one. Let the Pens take this one to heart. Who knows where the playoffs will lead them?

The good: Dany Sabourin played a phenomenal game and secured the point. Can't help a bouncing puck from time to time.

The bad: The power play went 0-for-4, with one of those chances coming in overtime. Can't deny some sloppy passing with the man advantage too.

The ugly: That Zigomanis faceoff.

Next game: Thursday against the Thrashers at 7:00

As mentioned earlier, Dany Sabourin will be in net over Marc-Andre Fleury tonight.

Boucher debuts with the team tonight. Looks like he's getting paired with Alex Goligoski. Evidence shows concrete lines and pairings don't exist in Pittsburgh anyway, so whatever works.

Marek Zidlicky makes me uncomfortable. He's as offensive as a defenseman can get. I hope the Pens play a disciplined game tonight and keep his shot away from the power play.

The Hockey News' John Grigg's say the Boucher-Sydor deal WILL (not might/could/may) pay dividends for the Pens. That sounds like confidence to me, and I'm going to hold him to that.

Scouting the Enemy: Minnesota Wild

Leading scorers: Mikko Koivu (2G, 13A, 15pts), Antti Miettinen (6G, 6A, 12pts)

Blogs: Hockey Wilderness

PS - tonight's game is on Versus. You have no excuse not to join us for the Open Thread.

The Wild are looking to win their third straight win while the Pens are hoping to extend their six-game to seven. It won't be an easy one and frankly I think the Wild stand a solid chance against the Pens.

Keep in mind this Wild team literally shot out of the gate to start the season. Minnesota kicked off the year with a 7-0-1 run before finally suffering a regulation loss to the Stars at the tail end of October. These guys are no joke.

Niklas Backstrom will get the start in net, as he may very well be right up there with the Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist for most starts by a goaltender. Then again even Henrik is getting some nights off. With the exception of one game (a loss), Backstrom has been in net for the Wild all year, posting an impressive 10-3-1 record.

This will be the first time Backstrom faces the Pens, as he was out with an injury last year when the Pens won 4-2. I actually remember thinking to myself last October, "Good, the Pens dodged a bullet there." But this season they're really going to be put to the test with a healthy Backstrom. Let's see how this one pans out.

Marc-Andre Fleury injured, will not play against Wild

Nothing more on this than the typical undisclosed injury, but apparently Fleury was injured in Saturday's game against the Sabres and will not play against the Wild tonight. Despite being injured he still finished the entire game - so no room for serious concerns, I'd say.

It's kinda ironic too, because last year Niklas Backstrom was injured in the Penguins 4-2 win over the Wild. I guess neither team is destined to play their starting goaltenders against one another.

On the Penguins' site, Michel Therrien said:

"He's not going to play (Tuesday)," head coach Michel Therrien said. "It's not a major injury but we don't want to take any risks. That's why we want to be really cautious with his injury."

I'm just going to take that as a sign that it's a slight strain/pull and leave it at that. It's definitely not the best of news for a team that is looking to win their seventh straight, but Dany Sabourin has given no reason to have doubt. I'm confident Sabu can pull through.

SBN Hockey Blog Round-up

Some great news for SBN Hockey this week. For starters, we have new life on Second City Hockey, the SBN blog devoted to the Chicago Blackhawks. If you're not a member of SCH then please shoot over there and (re)welcome our newest hockey blog. In addition to Winging it in Motown we now have both teams for the 2009 outdoor game represented on SBN.

Fear the Fin, a San Jose Sharks blog, also brought a new writer on board from We Bleed Teal.

The Islanders have an arena plan in the works and Gary Bettman is urging for approval. Dominik from Lighthouse Hockey gives his two cents.

James Mirtle posted a story up on From the Rink about an ailing goaltender who was recently diagnosed with incurable brain cancer. In one of those feel-good stories of the year, his team nominated to put him in net the other night and the fans applauded with a standing ovation.

If you want to know more from our friends at the Toronto Maple Leafs blog, Pension Plan Puppets, then Christy from Winging it in Motown provides some quick Q&A to get you in-the-know.

Recap of the Sabres' loss to the...oh right, Pens, is up on Die by the Blade. Be gentle.

Joe Sakic is out for the Avalanche, which for Pens fans probably doesn't mean much. But for a Pens fan in a fantasy hockey league it can mean a lot. Thanks Mile High Hockey. Thanks a lot.

The Pens take on the Wild tomorrow night, so if you want to get a feel for what's going on around the Minnesota camp be sure to check out Hockey Wilderness.

And I've been sworn to secrecy, but there are many more SBN hockey blogs on the way. Hopefully by next week I can share a few with you.

[EDIT] Well that was fast. Please welcome our newest SBN hockey Blog, In Lou We Trust, dedicated to the New Jersey Devils. Stop by, take a look around and remind John that he can tally a loss in advance for his team's November 29 game (against Pens ;-)).

So when she combines the two the results are often beyond awesome. Here is an example of what she delivered to my house this Saturday right before the Penguins went on a four-goal rally.
Philippe Boucher: The newest Pittsburgh Penguin

Now that the Pittsburgh Penguins have officially (mercifully?) sent Darryl Sydor off to Dallas, I figured we could take a look at the team's newest addition to the blue line, Philippe Boucher.

Up until last season Boucher's career really looked like it was on course for a steady rise. He recorded a career-high 51 points (19-32) in 2007, eight points higher than his previous high of 43 the year prior. 12 of his 19 goals came on the power play, something that should add an interesting boost to the Pens should they look to use him on either unit.

Last season Boucher was out of commission following shoulder surgery after only 38 games with the Stars. He comes to the Pens with only three points (all assists) over 16 games.

Hard to say right now where the Pens, more specifically Michel Therrien, will place Boucher in the defensive pairings. If I had to guess I'd say Therrien will look to use Boucher's 6'3" frame much like that of Hal Gill but has the added bonus of Boucher's right-handed shot. If Goligoski and Letang keep working the one-two lines, then perhaps a healthy point shot from Boucher will prove a nice addition to the third line beside Brooks Orpik.

There's already talks from Ray Shero that Boucher may be used on the Pens' power play:

"He’s a veteran defenseman with good size,. He’s a good fit for our power play unit. He has more experience; we’re a younger group out there. He gives us another option. He’s proven he can play 20-plus minutes and hopefully he can make a contribution for us."

"More experience" is just a gentle way of saying "oldest guy in the locker room." Not disparaging the fact, I think that proves a vital part to the Penguins' chemistry. You need a guy who is experienced, who has seen the ups and downs of a season or two and who can offer to pick the team up and put them on his shoulders. And now that his shoulder is completely recovered from last season's surgery, this role should not be an issue for the 35-year-old veteran.

Pittsburgh Penguins trade Darryl Sydor to Dallas for Philippe Boucher

James Mirtle broke this one a few minutes ago

Can't say this one necessarily comes as a surprise, now can we? I will admit though, it is kinda funny considering Sydor provided some analysis during last night's game from the press box after being a healthy scratch for yet another game.

All in all I have to say this works out for the Pens. Sydor was tired of playing here and I think the fans were tired of seeing him sit. I never saw anything wrong with Sydor's playing abilities and frankly I think the Penguins were better when he was on the ice. Sure, his offensive contributions weren't what you call Norris worthy, but that wasn't his job. When it came to a scrum in the corners, Sydor always came out clean and often with the puck. Not a lot of undersized defenseman can say that's the case.

Either way, Sydor returns from whence he came prior to the Penguins picking him up in 2007.

As for Boucher, it's been rumored that he's been off his game ever since getting banged up last season with a shoulder injury, piled on top a long history of injuries.

As Mirtle puts it:

[Sydor] has a long history with the Stars organization, and that's likely why they make the move, but the Penguins get the best player in this deal.

Both players make $2.5-million this season and will be UFAs in July. Boucher's a year younger at 35 but has battled injuries far more than Sydor in his career.

From the Rink

As far as I'm concerned this is a good move. Sydor was miserable since last season when Therrien kept scratching him from the lineup and continued to do so through the playoffs. I'm sure the promotions of Alex Goligoski and Kris Letang to the top line while Gonchar and Whitney hit the IR didn't do much for morale either. If Boucher is happy with providing depth on the roster then all the better.

Edit: I plan on moving this story up again later in the day/tomorrow. Just as I posted this news of Sydor was confirmed so I jumped on that...

Jordan Staal has been on fire for the Pittsburgh Penguins lately, there's no denying that. Coming off a rough 28 point sophomore season in 07/08 (12G, 16A), the Penguins - and fans - were really hoping to see Jordan Staal kick it into high gear on offense. The 2008 campaign started off looking like a continuation of last season. In fact, Staal went through the first 11 games of the season without registering a goal, yet managing to tally three assists on the scorecard.

Enter the last few games. Staal lit the lamp for the first time this season on November first against the St. Louis Blues en route to a 6-3 Penguins win. Two games later against the Islanders, Staal would tag another one, ultimately leading up to his season-high four-point, hat-trick night against the Detroit Red Wings on November 11. Thanks to last night's 5-2 win over the Sabres, Staal has another two goals to add to his season total of seven, already more than half of his goal production last season.

Even though two of his seven goals came as emptynetters, that doesn't negate the fact that he is starting to find the net. The month of November has proven already to be a very profitable month for Staal, where one can even argue that the Pens are winning every game in which he scores a goal.

Rumors circulated earlier this season, and during the offseason, that the Pens would look to move Staal by the trade deadline. Picking up his salary for next season might prove to be a trying task and something the Pens might not accommodate considering the heavy payloads of Malkin, Crosby, Fleury and Orpik. As far as I'm concerned, if Staal keeps producing at this level it would be a travesty to let him go. Granted it's still early in the season, but I can't see the Pens giving up a 20-goal (or more) scorer by the deadline. That would just be absurd, especially with a playoff push on the way.

If a seven goal, eight-point November isn't a sign of things to come, I don't know what is. With six games remaining in the month, combined with the Penguins current six-game win streak, I'd say Staal is only getting started.

Penguins rally back with four-goal third to beat Sabres

Lately any game the Penguins play looks more and more like a basketball game. Why watch the entire thing when all you need to do is tune in for the last 15 minutes?

Well the Penguins rallied a four-goal third period over the Buffalo Sabres to steal a 5-2 win, their sixth in a row. Despite a lack of action in the first two periods it was still an exciting game to watch from beginning to end. Luckily it wasn't one of those give-up-the-lead sort of games. Here's to hoping those are a thing of the past.

The night started slow for the Pens but they were able to gain some momentum behind the solid goaltending of Marc-Andre Fleury. Going 2-for-6 with the man advantage didn't hurt much either.

Malkin's 13-game point streak continued with a stellar three-point game where he netted one and helped on two others. For a team that had to 'settle' with him on the point during the power play, I'd say it's been working out pretty well for the Penguins. And while Malkin will occasionally watch a puck skip over his stick, you can't rag on him for it. More often than not the positives will outweigh the negatives with a guy like him working the point.

Also have to give some credit to Alex Goligoski. Even though he slipped the game-winner past Marty Biron in the Flyers game Thursday night, he didn't play the best of games - he said so himself. But tonight GoGo bagged the tying goal that started the Pens' rally off in the third while also getting an assist on Malkin's second period goal. I think it's safe to say we have ourselves a franchise defenseman in the making.

The Penguins will test out the undefeated luck of the blue jerseys Tuesday night against the Wild. Until then they remain 2-0 when sporting the baby blues.

The good: Phenomenal third period. Goligoski, Fedotenko and Staal x 2

The bad: The first period. But we can put that one behind us.

The ugly: Max Talbot's face after that puck he tried to dodge. Sorry Max, but at least you got this year's A&L commercial out of the way beforehand.

Next game: Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild @ 7:00

Looks like Dupuis will be skating down on the fourth line with Ziggy and Godard. On paper that looks like a solid line. Let's hope it holds on the ice.

I wanna see the Fedotenko/Malkin/Sykora line really click tonight. Everyone knows what the first line can do, but let's see some life from Line Two as well.

Ryan Miller is 2-4-2 against the Penguins in his career.

Pittsburgh has won their last four meetings against Buffalo.
