When Kris Letang shoots, he scores

Kris Letang

2008 - Kris Letang 5* 13 18 -1 16

Not every time he shoots of course, but my momma always said you can't score goals on shots you don't shoot.  Then she called me a puck hog.  Sometimes you never win.

Thankfully the Pens did win last night, and that was all thanks in part to Kris Letang's ability to put pucks on net, even more so PAST the goalie.

If you look above those aren't the most flattering of numbers for a guy who's dubbed an offensive defenseman, but I'm hardly complaining.  Since Letang jumped on board with the parent club last season Penguins fans have heard rumors of what he's capable of.

"Shoot" they all screamed whenever he had the puck.  He responded with a pass.

I guess it's a nervous thing, maybe one of those elements of your game that improves as you age.  Alex Goligoski picked up a goal within his first two games, but even still there is that look of apprehension whenever the puck touches his stick.  Probably part of the reason why the Pens just demoted him to Wilkes-Barre.

On the bright side of things, Letang strikes me as the sort of guy who will have a great career with Pitt.  I'm expecting, not hoping, that he'll pick up another 5-10 goals before the season's end.  He has his confidence, he's finding the net and he's making the shots count.  Last night along he picked up five.

That's often more than the Pens get in a single period.

I'm happy with Letang's play on offense but expect it to get better.  As far as D is concerned, even a few of his hits are rocking guys off their skates.
