2009 NHL Draft: New York Islanders draft Calvin de Haan, 12th overall

After swapping picks with the Minnesota Wild (16, 77 and 182 in exchange for 12) the New York Islanders selected defenseman Calvin de Haan 12th overall.  The Islanders are definitely carrying some swagger through this draft and making moves left and right.  This is their second first round pick (John Tavares first overall).

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

de Haan is a solid offensive defenseman who is a taller version of Ryan Ellis, without the upside potential.  de Haan's greatest attribute is his outstanding skating. His fluid stride and quick feet allow him to play sound positional defense -- and make up for any mistakes he may make.

Hockey's Future

A potential power play quarterback that might be able to make a difference once he matures, de Haan has a high level of hockey sense and shows the vision to make fast accurate decisions with the puck even with forwards bearing down on him.

There are very real concerns about his size and weight, despite the high level of hockey sense and his ability to move the puck.
