2009 NHL Draft: Tampa Bay Lightning draft Carter Ashton, 29th overall

The Tampa Bay Lightning drafted Carter Ashton after swapping the 32nd pick and 75th pick with the Red Wings.  The Lightning not only added a top defenseman earlier (Victor Hedman) but now added a puck-shooting forward to the corps as well.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Ashton's calling card is his shot, which gets away quickly and it has power and surprising accuracy in close quarters. What makes Ashton intriguing besides his size and skating is his goal scoring.

Shane Malloy

Scouts have noticed a marked improvement in several aspects, particularly when it comes to his skating and ability to create offense.  With more goals than assists, he has developed into more of a shooter.

The Hockey News

Ashton is a sought-after power forward who could be an early surprise at the draft.  Next season, his third in the WHL, should provide an opportunity to flourish offensively.
