Ah yes, it's that time you've all been (not) waiting for, the PensBurgh Awards. This year we did it a little differently, so I'm going to mirror what the NHL does a bit by announcing the finalists for each award. The actual winners and voting tallies will be announced concurrently with the actual NHL awards.
Here's how it worked, in short: I asked each PensBurgh contributor to vote on the seven "big" awards in the same way that the NHL conducts its awards voting.
For the Hart, Norris, Selke, Calder, and Byng, each voter ranked five players, and those players were assigned point values of 10, 7, 5, 3, or 1 depending on where that voter ranked the player.
For the Vezina and Adams, each voter ranked three players, and those players were assigned point values of 5, 3, or 1 depending on where that voter ranked the player.
Without further ado, the finalists listed (alphabetically) for each award! It's a long one...
Hart Memorial Trophy
...for the player adjudged most valuable to his team.
James Norris Memorial Trophy
...for the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position.
Frank J. Selke Trophy
...for the forward who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game.
Calder Memorial Trophy
...for the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League.
Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
...for the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.
Vezina Trophy
...for the goaltender who is adjudged to be the best at this position.
Jack Adams Award
...for the coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team's success.
Unfortunately, no pics for this part. The three finalists are Kevin Dineen of the Florida Panthers, Ken Hitchcock of the St. Louis Blues, and Dave Tippett of the Phoenix Coyotes.
