The Pittsburgh Penguins finished up the 2nd Quarter of the 2013-14 NHL season this Sunday. They have now officially reached the halfway point in the season so we are going to take a look at the results from the 2nd stretch of 21 games this season. You can check out and compare to the 1st Quarter Results if you want to refresh yourself.
The Penguins have gone 17-3-1 during the 2nd Quarter. During this stretch they had 74 Goals For and 47 Goals Against, which gives them a +27 Goal Differential through 21 games. During this time they also went 21 for 68 on the PP for a 30.9% success rate and have killed 60 of 66 PK chances for a 90.9% success rate. Finally the Pens as a team went 610 for 1236 at the faceoff dot this Quarter for a 49.4% success rate.
Cumulative Results
Overall at the halfway point in the season they have gone 29-11-1, which gives them a commanding 14 Point lead for #1 in the Metropolitan Division, a much closer 5 Point lead for #1 in the Eastern Conference, and are just 2 Points behind the league leaders to currently sit at #3 in the NHL, although they have played a couple more games than the 4th and 5th place teams so they could fall further behind. Based on Points% the Pens are currently #4 in the NHL.
At the halfway point in the season the Pens have 130 Goals For which is #4 in the league, 94 Goals Against which is #7 in the league, and a +36 Goal Differential which is #3 in the league. Their Goals For per Game is 3.10 which is #5 in the league while their Goals Against per Game is 2.29 which is also #5 in the league, that gives them a +0.81 Goal Differential per game which is #4 in the league.
So far this season the Pens have gone 1249 for 2424 at the faceoff dot for a 51.5% success rate which is #9 in the NHL. They have gone 36 for 140 on the PP for a 25.7% success rate which puts then at #1 in the NHL, and that comes off having the 6th most PP opportunities in the league. They have stopped 107 of 122 PK chances for a 87.7% success rate which is #2 in the NHL, and that comes from being the 3rd least penalized team in the league.
Of course the most impressive part of these numbers is the fact that it comes during a season that has seen the Pens so far playing with a league leading 220+ Man Games Lost.
