Minor Distractions - AHL/ECHL 2nd Quarter

New, comment

Both the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the ECHL Wheeling Nailers reached the midway point of the 2013-14 season last Friday. So let's see how well they did in the 2nd Quarter of the season.

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins minor league affiliates both managed to reach the midway point of the 2013-14 season on the same exact night. The AHL season lasts 76 games, making the midpoint of the season 38 games, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins played their 38th game on Friday January 17th. The ECHL season lasts 72 games, making the midpoint of the season 36 games, and the Wheeling Nailers played their 36th game on Friday January 17th.

WBS Baby Pens

We looked at the first 19 games of the season back in our 1st Quarter Results. In 19 games through the 2nd Quarter of the season the Baby Pens went 10-7-1-1, scored on 11 of 83 Power Play opportunities for a 13.3 PP%, and stopped 68 of 80 Penalty Kill chances for a 85.0 PK%.

Of course they played an additional 2 games over the weekend, so we are already into the 3rd Quarter, but that gives them an overall 24-12-1-3 record good for #2 in the East Division, #4 in the Eastern Conference, and #6 in the AHL. They are just 1 Point out of 1st in the East Division, which would also make them #3 in the Eastern Conference. They are #27 in the AHL with a 14.6 PP% and #9 with a 84.1 PK%.

Jeff Deslauriers went 6-6-0, stopping 259 of 285 for a 2.32 GAA and a .909 Sv% in 11 starts, with 1 shutout, a perfect scoreless 21 save 2 1/2 periods coming in on relief to pull off a W, and pulled from the net twice.
