The Boys Are Back In Town. The Pittsburgh Penguins hit the ice for their first game after the Olympic break and the Trade Deadline is less than a week away. So this seems like the perfect opportunity to take a look at how they have performed up to this point in the 2013-14 NHL season.
We are going to look at Goals vs Threshold, which you may remember from when we looked at it at the beginning of the season is metric that attempts to measure an individual player's contributions to the team's total Goals For and Goals Against as compared to what an average replacement level player would be able to accomplish. We are also going to look at Point Shares, which you may remember from when we looked at it at the beginning of the season is a metric that attempts to measure an individual player's contributions to the team's regular season Points total.
And just because it seemed interesting, I went ahead and created a combined metric, a way to look at the contributions a player brings to both Points and Goal Differential. For people that are going to look at that and complain about possession being more important, bear in mind that the formulae used to calculate those numbers do indeed take shot attempts into account. By combining DGvT and DPS we have a good idea of how well a player performs in his own end, being able to keep the opponent from finding the back of the net, so I shall refer to this value as Armor Class (AC). When we combine OGvT and OPS we see how good the player is at overcoming the opponent's defense, so we shall refer to this one as To Hit Armor Class 0 (THAC0). And then in combining GvT with PS we have a measure of the player's overall skill, so we will call this Experience Level (EXP).
I went ahead and threw the data together in bubble charts for those that prefer visualized data. The X-axis is used for the offensive metrics, with players further right being more effective at helping the team score goals. The Y-axis is used for the defensive metrics, with players further up being more effective in their own end. The size of the bubble is the combined total, with yellow being positive and white being negative. Players whose name is in red are those that are currently unavailable, either through injury or because they are no longer with the club, but I left them in for comparison.

- Dupuis, Bennett, Conner, and Sill are currently injured while Jeffrey and D`Agostini are no longer with the club.
- GvT does not have separate values for each team, so new Penguin Pyatt and former Penguins D`Agostini and Jeffrey are partly based on their efforts on other teams.
- Bennet, Kobasew, and Letourneau-Leblond had dots that were an even 0, so I had to fudge the number in order to it to be displayed.
- Kobasew and D'Agostini are right next to each other, with D`Agostini just 0.1 further left.
- Zolnierczyk and Conner are literally exactly the same and right on top of one another.
- Letourneau-Leblond and Ebbett are right next to each other, with Ebbett just 0.1 further left.

- PS does have separate values for each team, so the information here is only for the players' time on the Pens.
- Kobasew, D`Agostini, Letourneau-Leblond, and Drazenovic had dots that were an even 0, so I had to fudge the number in order to get it to be displayed.
- Conner, Zolnierczyk, and D`Agostini are all right in a row, with D`Agostini 0.2 further left from Zolnierczyk who is 0.3 further left from Conner.
- Drazenovic, Letourneau-Leblond, Ebbett, and Jeffrey are all right in a row, with Jeffrey 0.1 further left of Ebbett who is 0.1 further left of Drazenovic who is tied with Letourneau-Leblond.
