UPDATE: No suspension for Nino Niederreiter, Olli Maatta update

According to the PG's Dave Molinari, the NHL has decided not to suspend Minnesota Wild forward Nino Niederreiter for his hit on Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta.

Niederreiter will not be punished by the league for his shove on Olli Maatta Tuesday night. Source says NHL reviewed it "long and hard."

Here's the hit, if you need to see it again;

For the check-list that hit was:

• A) incredibly late after the puck was gone
  
• B) totally unnecessary on a defenseless player
  
• C) initiated clearly from behind
  
• D) full extension of the arms on the follow-through
• E) caused a serious injury

Pretty much everything the NHL Department of Player Safety looks at when they determine a suspension, except for contact to the head. No clue why the league has decided to let Niederreiter off the hook, but hey at least they looked at it long and hard.

Maatta was taken to the hospital on a stretcher and remains there as of this (Wednesday morning), also per the PG:

General manager Jim Rutherford said this morning that Maatta has not been released, and that team physician Dr. Dharmesh Vyas is performing surgery on another patient, so the Penguins don’t expect an update on Maatta until later today.

The PG mentioned a concern for an internal injury, and it did look like Maatta fell into the opened bench door with his back/side type area. The Penguins are off today, but if they give an update on Maatta's condition we'll be sure to update it.

Per Bob McKenzie some news on Maatta as of Wednesday afternoon:

Injured Pittsburgh Penguin defenceman Olli Maatta did not sustain any internal injuries, as was first feared when he was shoved through an open bench door by Minnesota’s Nino Niederreiter Tuesday night, but there’s enough soft tissue and muscle damage to his mid-section that he’s likely to be considered more week-to-week than day-to-day.

It’s still too early, though, to put a precise timeline on his absence from the Penguins’ lineup. Maatta remained in hospital overnight for testing and treatment. How he continues to respond will ultimately determine when he’s able to play again.
