The Pittsburgh Penguins make some cuts

Leon Halip-USA TODAY Sports

Believe it or not, this is the last week of the NHL preseason, the Pittsburgh Penguins only have 2 more exhibition games (Wednesday at home for Detroit then Saturday at home against Columbus) before a few days break and the regular season opener next Thursday the 13th.

With that comes cuts, and the Pens trimmed 17 names of their NHL camp today

Players assigned to WBS include: goaltenders Casey DeSmith and Leland Irving; defensemen Tim Erixon, Ethan Prow, Stuart Percy, Cameron Gaunce, Reid McNeill, Steve Oleksy and Chad Ruhwedel; and forwards Oskar Sundqvist, Adam Krause, Ryan Haggerty, Sahir Gill, Josh Archibald, Dominik Simon, Garrett Wilson and Jean-Sebastien Dea.

Erixon, Percy, Gaunce, McNeill, Oleksy, Ruhwedel and Wilson all have to clear waivers on Tuesday at noon before they can join WBS.

Not too many surprises in the list above, and most of those names are going to form the core of the AHL team. If there's any surprise it would be a somewhat early return to the AHL for Sundqvist and Simon, both of whom had extreme outside chances of sticking in the NHL roster, but with 13 healthy NHL forwards that was always an uphill battle.

There's 31 players left in NHL camp they are:

Goalies (3): Fleury, Murray, Jarry

***Sending down all the goalies pretty much confirms what was expected: Tristan Jarry will be the Pens NHL backup until Matt Murray returns to full health sometime in October.

Defenseman (9): Bengtsson, Cole, Daley, Dumoulin, Letang, Maatta, Pouliot, Schultz, Warsofsky

***Lukas Bengtsson and David Warsofsky, one would expect, are going to be the cuts here eventually. But it is a little telling that on a day where several vets were placed on waivers (as Warsofsky would have to be), he was not among them. Is the door open for him to be the 7th NHL defenseman, or are they just keeping him as a camp body for the next week?

Forwards (19, 13 good plus 6 injured cuts): Bonino, Crosby, Cullen, Fehr, Hagelin, Hornqvist, Kessel, Kuhnhackl, Kunitz, Malkin, Rust, Sheary, Wilson

6 extras: Blueger, Di Pauli, Guentzel, Porter, Rowney, Sestito

***It was announced on Saturday that Blueger and Di Pauli are each out 6-8 weeks with lower body injuries and will be non-roster injured reserve until they get healthy and then sent down to the minors. Jake Guentzel and Carter Rowney have both had strong camps and have earned further time to get a longer look, though neither will be making the team. Porter and Sestito are coach favorites that are depth but unless the injuries to Rust and Cullen are too severe, the former 2 should be cut later in the week.
