Breaking News: Penguins Acquire Justin Schultz

Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

Penguins acquire Edmonton defenseman Justin Schultz, stay tuned for more details.

Update:

Last year, Penguins got caught with no salary cap space and five defensemen. This season, GM Jim Rutherford was going to have none of it as he traded the 2016 third round pick to Edmonton to acquire Schultz, which according to Pierre Lebrun, Oilers retained 50% of his remaining salary.

Schultz is a right-handed defenseman that former GM Ray Shero and staff tried to sign out of college but lost out to Edmonton. The 25-year old will be a restricted free agent this summer giving the team an option as Ben Lovejoy is set to be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Now that Schultz is on the team, it will create competition for the third pairing with Derrick Pouliot, Ben Lovejoy and Ian Cole.
