Olli Maatta injured and is "week-to-week"

The Pittsburgh Penguins don't emerge from their 3-0 loss last night unscatched, top-paring defenseman Olli Maatta is "week-to-week" with a lower body injury according to coach Mike Sullivan.

Last night I sent a text and said that at least no one got obviously injured in last night's 3-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

Looks like I spoke too soon. Despite playing right up to the final whistle in the 3rd period last night, Olli Maatta apparently suffered an injury at some point.

Olli Maatta going down hurts big time, being as he's been playing top pair with Kris Letang and the duo have been killing it together.

The scariest number is that Pittsburgh is only scoring 0.95 goals in 60 minutes when Letang is on the ice without Maatta compared with an eye-popping 3.28 when the 3/58 pair are together. However, most of this sample is Mike Johnston related and that should be going up, Kris Letang will be OK.

Luckily for the Penguins, they have significant depth on defense this season with Derrick Pouliot and Ben Lovejoy both scratches last night.

If the Pens go into their game with Detroit tomorrow with this sort of lineup, it would mean a bump up for Trevor Daley (who's played top-pair minutes a lot with his former team in Dallas) and reunites this year's successful pair of Brian Dumoulin and Lovejoy.

That third pairing rotation likely means Pouliot is the odd-man out, since the Ian Cole and Justin Schultz pairing has been playing well since they've been united 9 games ago.

The playoffs start exactly 3 weeks from today, so we'll see if Maatta is able to return in time for them. Without knowing too much more that's about all that can do.
