The dog days of summer are pretty much behind us at this point, to the relief of every hockey fan. To help combat them, NHL Network ran a countdown series on who the best players in the NHL are, with lists dedicated to forwards, defensemen, and goaltenders.
Then, to wrap it all up, they put together a top 50 list with players from all positions included - one that saw Sidney Crosby named the second best.
Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang also made the list, at 18th and 22nd overall, respectively. Patrick Kane was the only player to beat out Crosby.
In fairness to NHL Network, Kane was the league’s leading scorer over the 2015-16 season; then again, Crosby turned it on for the second half of the season (about the time when the rest of the Penguins started to cement themselves as not just Cup contenders, but favorites), and kind of closed out his year with a Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe, so...
What’s the bet that if NHL Network revisits their list in a year, Crosby will be number one?
