Penguins vs. Flyers Recap: Philly blanks a flat Pittsburgh team

The Penguins limp home after a 3-1-1 road trip sees them play a flat and uninspired game in Philly en route to a 4-0 loss. The only good thing about this one is it is over.

Pregame

Matt Cullen returns to the lineup after missing a few with a lower-body injury and Mark Streit is able to play after an injury last game.

1st period

Not too much going on early on, Sidney Crosby takes a penalty which judging by the crowd reaction is the most satisfying thing to happen at a Flyers game this season. Nothing comes of it on the ensuing power play largely thanks to Cullen asserting dominance and playing keep-away on the whole Philly power play.

Both teams get a power play and do nothing with it, late in the first Matt Murray robs Brayden Schenn from point-blank range in front to send the game into intermission at 0-0.

Shots 8-7 in favor of Pittsburgh.

2nd period

Poor play by Pittsburgh leads to the first goal of the game for Philly, Ian Cole turns the puck over with a bad up-ice pass and the Flyers convert on a rebound.

Cole's poor 2nd period continues when he takes a penalty and Philly scores on the impending power play with Wayne Simmonds making a nice jump/turn move to find a rebound and smack it home. 2-0 bad guys.

To make matters worse, Murray gets kneed in the head by a jumping Flyer player in his crease. They stop play to check him out but he stays in the game.

3rd period

Not too much good happens, Ron Hainsey doesn't come out for the start of the period so the misfortune of finishing a game with a full 18 skaters continues.

Claude Giroux scored and then Dale Weise gets a crazy one late. Meh

Some Thoughts

  • 3-1-1 on the road trip isn't bad but the boys sure didn't have much for legs tonight with the 5th game in 8 days and all the injuries. Sucks to suck but so it goes.
  • Abbreviated recap on the account that there isn't too much to comment on, just a flat game and it's the final episode of Workaholics which is a better usage of time.

Until next time on Friday night where the Penguins finally get a home game!
