Saturday Pens Points: Another nice contract comparable for Guentzel

News and notes around the NHL on a non-game day Saturday for Pittsburgh

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins at Toronto Maple Leafs Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

No game yesterday, today or anytime soon for the Penguins, so let’s make some chicken salad and see what’s going on around the hockey world.

The Pens had enough of a break in the schedule to where they could have returned home after the Toronto game, but instead are going out to Western Canada early for some team-building getaways in the resort town of Banff, Alberta. Must be nice! [Tribune-Review - Bombulie]

Vegas locked up Alex Tuch for seven years at a rate of $4.75m per. Gotta love that comparable to add to the list if you’re Jake Guentzel’s reps, Guentzel has more career playoff points (42) than Tuch has regular season points (38). Clearly Vegas is paying for potential and ceiling and the future (being 6’4, 220 doesn’t hurt either) rather than already established production, but for accomplishments Guentzel’s market is clearly pushing well was $5m per year, one would think. The Wilkes-Barre Penguins put 5 goals past Flyers top goalie prospect Carter Hart to take a 5-4 win last night. Zach Aston-Reese and Teddy Blueger were among the goal scorers. [WBS Penguins]

A great, multi-faceted look over several different metrics and angles to give a more complete view on the game that is showing Jack Johnson stats. Jesse knocks this one out of the park, though it is early it will obviously be a very interesting storyline to follow how Johnson does with more data available as the year goes on. Goalies are complaining that the new pads they have to wear this year is leaving them with arm bruises. [ESPN - Wyshynski]

Concern in Toronto seems to be growing as October ticks away and the Maple Leafs and William Nylander still can’t find common ground for a contract agreement. [PPP]

And, while unlikely, could Minnesota be a player to offer a guy like Matt Dumba up to Toronto in a trade for Nylander? [Hockey Wilderness]

Speaking of contracts, the Hurricanes are going to have to starting shelling out the big bucks this off-season to bring back restricted free agents Sebastien Aho and Teuvo Teravainen, who are both playing their way into great spots. They both had better seasons than Nylander last year and could be in the $6-7+ million range themselves on a long-term deal. [Canes Country]

Oh no, Montreal fans are starting “fill...with hope that we are witnessing the start of something special” after a 4-1-1 start to the season that includes two wins over a disinterested Pens team. Gotta think that hope’s getting crushed in the course of a long season, but stranger things have happened, right? [Habs EOTP]

Rangers fans are already having to talk themselves into reasons why Kevin Shattenkirk is good...Really, he is you guys! Nevermind that healthy scratch, lots of good players and high-priced free agent acquisitions get benched all the time! [Blueshirt Banter]
