It’s a throwback-inspired look, and one many were expecting and hoping for. The yellow buckets were teased during the Penguins’ Stadium Series game against the Flyers and welcomed by much praise, and they’ve made a comeback for the thirds.
From a team release:
The Pittsburgh Penguins today unveiled their new third jerseys, featuring a dynamic gold background with black sleeves and white and gold striping.
The new “thirds,” created by adidas, will be worn for the first time on Thursday, November 15, when the Penguin take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at PPG Paints Arena.
They also will go on sale on for the first time on November 15 and be available exclusively at PensGear stores for a five-day period from November 15-19.
After that they will be available at DICK’S Sporting Goods stores, shop.nhl.com, adidas.com and adidas.ca – in addition to the PensGear locations at PPG Paints Arena and SouthSide Works.
The new design incorporates elements from the heritage of gold jerseys worn by Mario Lemieux and the Penguins in the 1980s as well, which is an extra treat.
Last season, as Adidas took over the NHL jersey contract, there were no third/alternate jerseys in the league. This year, they’re slowly being reintroduced, and you can check out the rest of the league here at Icethetics. A lot has seemed to take the nostalgia of 1980s/90s old designs.
Of all the new jerseys for the year, the standouts for us personally are:
- Edmonton looks a lot better mainly blue rather than orange, so that’s a great look that harkens back to the days when the Oilers not only had the perennial scoring champion but also won Cups
- The old school Calgary jerseys are very sharp, makes us think Lanny MacDonald and Gary Roberts are about to take the next shift..
- What kid who grew up on The Mighty Ducks movies doesn’t like seeing that logo on Anaheim’s chest?
- Arizona using a great design and old logo, made even better with the goalie’s pads
The Pens are one of the league’s most popular teams and play in a ton of outdoor games and special events, so it’s just a matter of time before more and different designs are out there. Hey, we keep buying them as fans, so the company, team, and league will surely keep cranking out the new designs and colors.
Pittsburgh will don these gorgeous, gold sweaters for the first time November 15 and will be sold exclusively at PensGear for a five-day period from November 15-19. They will then be available on several other platforms, including Dick’s Sporting Goods and NHL.com, after that.
But, it all comes down to this, with this newly released design what’s the instant reaction from the community?
