Sidney Crosby loves scoring highlight reel goals on March 21st

For the second year in a row, Sidney Crosby scored an unreal goal on March 21st. Gotta relive the highlights on this strange coincidence

NHL: Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Last night Sidney Crosby scored one of the more remarkable goals of the season against the Montreal Canadiens.

An impressive feat of hand-eye coordination and a great goal to be sure.

What makes it even more spooky is that last night’s goal vs MTL came one year to the day from when Crosby scored probably his best goal of the 2016-17 season against the Buffalo Sabres on 3/21/17. You know, this one.

One more cool commonality: last year’s 3/21/17 goal against Buffalo was Sid’s 41st goal of the season. He’d go on to win the Rocket Richard trophy for most goals in the NHL....Last night against Montreal on 3/21/18, Evgeni Malkin scored HIS 41st goal of the season. Geno still has some work to do for the Rocket, but pretty incredible that exactly 12 months apart the Pens superstars both score #41 on the same day in a day and age where it’s incredibly difficult to score so many goals.

All this similar March 21st stuff brings to mind a very similar date, March 25th where Marc-Andre Fleury recorded shutouts FOUR separate times on the date of 3/25 (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011).

Crosby also recorded an assist later in the game to get to 700 career assists. Here’s a look at active players with 400+ goals and 700+ assists, via hockey-reference.com

Being in a class with Jaromir Jagr and only Jaromir Jagr is pretty special. Also, Jagr isn’t NHL active anymore so Crosby will be peerless for this category until Malkin scores 41 more goals and gets 146 more assists as the next likely player to join this specific club.

Anyways, back to the 3/21 connection, for someone as superstitious as Sidney Crosby there is no such thing as coincidences. We just hope the NHL schedulers put the Penguins on for a game for March 21st, 2019. Can’t wait to see what Crosby has up his sleeve for that one.
