Are the Penguins to get new alternate jerseys for 2018-19?

We don’t have much to go off of, but there’s some indication the Penguins will get new third jerseys for 2018-19.

Someone from r/hockeyjerseys is claiming to know a guy who has this from Adidas with NHL teams that are getting new third/alternate jerseys for the 2018-19 season. The Pittsburgh Penguins are among those listed.

It’s not much to go on, but it makes sense. Aside from Stadium Series jerseys, no NHL team had a regular alternate jersey this season (2017-18) as the league switched from Reebok to Adidas jerseys. It was long reported that adidas would slowly re-introduce new alternate jerseys for teams after they established the normal home and away sweaters.

The Penguins will take on the Flyers in Philadelphia at the Eagles stadium in February 2019 for a Stadium Series game. Teams always get a new look for that event, so it stands to reason Pittsburgh will get some new duds for that game.

Rumors are that Philly has a black jersey ready to go for that event, if so will the Penguins get another yellow jersey? That would match the color scheme of the two teams from last time the rivals played outdoors in 2017. The look the Pens sported at the previous Stadium Series win against the Flyers was pretty much a hit, and I personally don’t even like the mostly yellow designs.

Blue could always be another candidate for a color to be picked, like the famous jersey worn in the 2008 Winter Classic in Buffalo that the Penguins used as an alternate for several years to come.

One shade of blue to bet against is the so-called “cursed” dark blue color, worn in the 2011 Winter Classic and best known as the jersey worn in separate games where Sidney Crosby (head/neck) and Evgeni Malkin (torn ACL) suffered serious injury in the 2011-12 season. Since then, dark blue sweaters has been considered color non grata in the Penguins organization.

One other look to bet against for a 2018-19 return would be the “Robo Penguin” design introduced in 1993. Legend and rumors says this isn’t a favorite look of Mario Lemieux, and indeed the team discontinued this as a logo in favor of the classic and more beloved “Skating Penguin” logo as the years went by and once Lemieux took team control.

Many Pens fans have long clamored and hoped for a “Snoop Dogg” style jersey return with “PITTSBURGH” spelled diagonally down the front like it was in the franchise’s early days and also the sharp black and yellow version that the team wore in the early 90s.
