NHL broadcaster Kevin Weekes joined Episode 12 of the show and immediately dropped a bomb within the first minute of our interview with him after complimenting Matt Murray’s stellar 50-save performance against the Flyers on Monday.

“My biggest thing for Matt Murray now as he goes forward is that I want to see him make some gains off the ice,” said Weekes. “I think he can put on 10 pounds of muscle on that frame and become a little bit more resilient to injury. He certainly has a lot of talent, he has the mentality having won two Stanley Cups already, and he’s learned a lot from (Marc-Andre Fleury) as well. I’m looking to see him grow in his off-ice fitness commitment. I think that will have a big impact on him on the Penguins.”

Weekes was adamant on driving home the hard-working fitness culture of the Penguins, specifically listing the team leaders in that regard in Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, Patric Hornqvist, and Matt Cullen. He’d love to see Murray take that same initiative and prioritize his fitness as well.

Being a former goaltender himself, Weekes possesses a ton of knowledge on the subject and tapped into it as he went through his detailed talking points during the episode. Weekes often focused on the things goalies can control, like physical conditioning, rather than misfortune and bad luck to help them avoid getting injured.

Make sure to listen to this week’s episode for the full interview with Weekes. He was a fantastic guest and dropped a ton of great, interesting nuggets during the show.
