Penguins players will hit the ice for the start of training camp exactly four weeks from tomorrow (September 13th), so our long summer of discontent is showing signs of coming to an end, believe it or not. It’s felt like forever but it’ll be time to get going for the season before you know it.
With that in mind, another fall mainstay that helps usher in the new season is the NHL20 video game that also comes out in September.
We’re starting to get leaks about how the game has rated some Pens’ players:
That same tweet thread included all the teams, from scanning them it looked like Sidney Crosby (93) is again the second highest rated player in this year’s game. Edmonton’s Connor McDavid (94) edges him out. There are a couple of 92 rated players that I saw upon only a quick glance, it looked like Alex Ovechkin and Nikita Kucherov were among them, and oddly enough Drew Doughty was too. Then several players joined Evgeni Malkin as being 91 overalls.
The impact of Pittsburgh downgrading talent can be felt on this video game, as Phil Kessel is an 89 overall in this game. His primary replacement in Alex Galchenyuk is but an 84 and other recent trade/free agent additions they’re paying a lot of money to don’t show up in the top half of skilled players. All to be expected but it just hammers the point home about some of the decisions made recently.
Matt Murray didn’t get a ton of love, tying for 16th highest rated goaltender in the game and behind some odd names. Murray finished sixth overall in the league in save percentage last season (minimum 42 games).
I’d think he and Robin Lehner certainly have cases to be ranked higher and some others (Devan Dubnyk, Jonathan Quick) should be bumped back a bit. Almost like there’s a two year delay on how they judge goalies.

There’s also seemingly a bit more depth to the GM mode, which is cool and badly needed.

You can hire coaches, fire them and manage them like scouts in nhl19. You manage both nhl and ahl coaches.
Your lines (fwd lines and d pairs) now have chemistry in franchise mode. With chemistry, your players from each line gain or lose overalls
This is all non-spon content, by the way, just to be above board on that. Just not a ton going on so why not talk about a popular aspect among hockey fans. Looking forward to this year’s game? Will you get it?
