The Penguins offseason was a little bit of a rollercoaster ride.
They traded for Kasperi Kapanen, Matt Murray, bought out the contract of Jack Johnson, signed Cody Ceci, traded Patric Hornqvist, and acquired Mike Matheson among other moves.
In an article grading every team’s offseason moves ($), the ESPN hockey crew graded the Penguins offseason at a B-.
In their analysis, they mentioned that the team’s smartest move was buying out the contract of Jack Johnson, which I think is something we can all agree with.
The most questionable move made this offseason was listed as the acquisition of Mike Matheson who carries a $4.875 million cap hit for five more years. By cap hit, Matheson will count more than Brian Dumoulin and John Marino, almost combined ($5.025m for Dumo+Marino)! Matheson also has a hefty five years remaining on his contract.
They also mentioned under ‘What’s left to do?’ as ‘nothing’ but immediately noted that doing nothing is not the sort of thing that Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford is conditioned to do, which lines up with the bevy of moves he has made during time in Pittsburgh.
I guess we’ll find out what is next to come.
