Never before has a league advanced from crowning a champion through the biggest moments of the offseason. Just a few weeks after the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup, the NHL has already hosted the 2020 Draft and gone through the first wave of free agency.

For the Penguins, it appears the fanbase has mixed feelings on the offseason so far. A plurality of fans gave Pittsburgh a “C” on their draft class, with more giving an “F” than an “A.”

Things got slightly better for the Penguins once free agency opened a week later. More than half of Pittsburgh fans said they are happy with the Penguins offseason so far.

It certainly has been a mixed bag as the team sought to get younger and faster it meant shuffling out popular players like Patric Hornqvist and unpopular ones too like Jack Johnson. But acquisitions of previously shaky defensemen like Mike Matheson and Cody Ceci doesn’t inspire much confidence and the team only had limited funds to make important free agent signings of forwards like Mark Jankowski and Evan Rodrigues who will need to be better in the future than they were in the immediate past.

Between trades and continued free agency moves, there is still time for something big to happen during the offseason. That is especially true with the unclear nature of the 2021 season.
