May 31 flashback: Penguins light up Rinne to take 2-0 SCF series lead

Looking back three years ago when the Pens jumped out to a two game series lead by defeating the Nashville Predators

Nashville Predators v Pittsburgh Penguins - Game Two

On a Sunday morning let’s take a look back to the Penguins last game on this date, May 31st, which happened to be a Stanley Cup Final game. Pittsburgh would top the Nashville Predators to take a 2-0 series lead.

Here’s the game recap I wrote back then. Always fun to go back down memory lane.

After the Pens fell behind 1-0, Conor Sheary would setup Jake Guentzel for a goal to get Pittsburgh on the board. It looks like we may just get to see Sheary and Guentzel rising again if the NHL can get the season going again.

After two periods shots were 32-19 in favor of the Predators. It was a great job by Matt Murray to keep it a 1-1 game going into the third. At that point, the Pens took over and the wheels fell off for Pekka Rinne. Guentzel would add his second of the game, pouncing on a big rebound kicked out by Rinne.

Scott Wilson would strike next to make it 3-1. The old Wilson-Malkin-Kessel line who could forget.

Evgeni Malkin would make it 4-1 and end Rinne’s night, picking the top corner of his glove side and the rout was on.

The Pens scored again but it was negated on an offside challenge. The score would end 4-1 and Pittsburgh took a commanding 2-0 lead that they would never look back from.
