On this date in Penguins history: falling behind 3-0 to the Bruins

In 2013, the Penguins fell into a hole they couldn’t recover from.

Pittsburgh Penguins v Boston Bruins - Game Three

In the early summer days of 2013, the Penguins were down 2-0 in the Eastern Conference Final against the Boston Bruins. They were frustrated, banging their heads off of the walls, and couldn’t score.

Enter Game 3 at the TD Garden. A chance to get back in the series.

Just over a minute into the game, David Krejci put the Bruins ahead 1-0 and it wasn’t looking good. During the 2nd period, Chris Kunitz evened the score at 1-1. These would be the last goals scored for some time.

The third period would come and go.

The first overtime period would come and go.

The Penguins had peppered Tuukka Rask with 54 shots and had one goal to show for it.

As Evgeni Malkin was making his way up the ice, a severe hook from Jaromir Jagr went uncalled. Playoff rules.

The puck goes the other way. Patrice Bergeron feeds Brad Marchand. Game over. Series over effectively.

What a tough loss.
