The Penguins got their first break on Thursday off the ice since training camp started, so let’s go around the league this morning for some other NHL news and notes to know to get you ready for Friday.

Sidney Crosby and other Pens players sent hand-written thank you notes to season ticket holders. Nicest team ever? [Penguins.com]

Patrick Marleau is the ultimate old guy without a Cup after over 1,900 total NHL games played over a span of now four different decades. And yet, still looking for the ultimate prize. [Tribune Review]

The Pens’ opponent, Montreal, has some key choices to make about which young defender(s) to play in August. So learn a little about Noah Juulsen, Cale Fleury and Josh Brook. [Habs Eyes on the Prize]

Chicago mines the free agent market for two young players. The Blackhawks sign Swiss scoring champion Pius Suter, 24, and a former Flyer draft pick who didn’t want to sign with Philly (smart kid) in Wyatt Kalnyuk. Good for them, and good for a cap-strapped team that has NHL spots available. [Second City Hockey]

Corey Crawford’s unavailable status this far into training camp is throwing a really big question in the Edmonton/Chicago play in series. The ‘Hawks depth chart without him is not a pretty picture. [Copper n Blue]

Ranger goalie Igor Shesterkin and his stickhandling ability might be a big factor against a high-pressure, possession-heavy team like Carolina. [Blueshirt Banter]

After appearing the first two days of camp, Bruins star David Pastrnak was “unfit to participate” (along with Ondrej Kase) in Boston. This could mean a minor injury, or who knows what. [Stanley Cup of Chowder]

For some teams, it’s the offseason already. Here’s a checklist for the Metropolitan division rival Devils who have quite a bit of work to do in order to rebuild. [All About the Jersey]

“Hot Seat: 10 players who could pay the price if they don’t prove their worth”. Matt Murray is the first player named! Old pals Phil Kessel and Marc-Andre Fleury also make the list. (Fleury missed a Vegas practice recently, and they’ve acquired former Vezina winner Robin Lehner). [The Athletic $]
