Pittsburgh Penguins centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were both ranked on NHL Network’s Top 20 Centers Right Now during last night’s edition of NHL Tonight. Crosby was ranked as the league’s fourth-best center, and Malkin ranked four spots lower at #8.

During the countdown, former teammate of Crosby and Malkin, Mike Rupp, offered some words on the generational talents. On Crosby:

“So many people in Steel City losing their marbles over this. Having Crosby at four? Listen, Sidney Crosby is still – you could argue this either way – the man in my mind.”

On Malkin, Rupp said:

“If you’re asking me, last minute of a game of all the players in the league, who I want to have the puck on their stick, it’s 71. He certainly could be higher on this list, but Evgeni Malkin is still getting it done. He’s got a lot of fire in that belly.”

In addition to Crosby and Malkin, fellow Penguin Jake Guentzel came in at number 20 on NHL Network’s Top 20 Wings Right Now this past Friday.

Continuing tonight and Thursday, NHL Network will unveil its latest edition of Top 20 Defensemen Right Now. It will be interesting to see where Kris Letang ranks on this list, too. The player rankings will culminate with NHL Network’s five-part series, Top 50 Players Right Now, announced at a later date, following the conclusion of the 2020 Stanley Cup Final.

The NHL and NHL Network have long drawn the ire of fans for how certain players are ranked (see Malkin, Evgeni and the NHL 100). And Rupp even brought up this very point. But this list, if nothing else, shows that Sid and Geno, at their “advanced age,” are still hanging with the best of ‘em.
