Advanced stats

Corsi For%: 50.13%

xGF%: 54.48%

Scoring Chance %: 51.23%

5v5 on-ice shooting%: 7.41%

On-ice save%: .919%

Bottom line

John Marino’s remarkable play and poise with and without the puck, along with his extremely low-cost entry-level contract are going to be vitally important for the Penguins moving forward, especially considering the flat-cap situation and the fact that there are reports of the team not wanting to spend as much.

Ideal 2020-21

Ideally for the Penguins, they get what they had from Marino this past season and then some. Marino has shown that he can handle being on the ice in all situations and there isn’t any reason to think he can’t handle more ice time.

Question to ponder

The question to ponder is if the Penguins do give Marino more ice time and more responsibility. As the postseason series with the Canadiens made evident, the Penguins weren’t capable of hiding a bad third-pairing. Elevating better pairings to keep that third-pairing off of the ice could be an immediate quick fix.
