NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

A new season. A new Pensburgh Podcast episode. And a brand new co-host. It’s a whole bunch of new today.

With the Penguins’ season officially underway and Game #1 in the books, Garrett and the new guy, Frank, are here to dissect the best and the worst from the first game of the season.

And for those worried about Hooks’ contributions to the podcast, he’ll be popping in every now and again if needed, but Frank is here to stay.

We kicked off this episode with a recap of the first game of the season and we looked forward to Pittsburgh’s next game — later tonight, again, against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Perhaps one of the bigger talking points from Game 1 was the Pens’ defense, and more specifically, the contributions of Mike Matheson and Cody Ceci. It was a debut I’m sure Matheson would like to forget (the Quebec native was on the ice for three of the first four goals against, and the other one was scored while he was in the penalty box).

Sidney Crosby’s first goal of the season was a special one for several reasons. Not only did the captain score a one-handed gem (even if Carter Hart was out of position), but he has now scored seven opening night goals, one more than Mario Lemieux ever did.

And, of course, what PensBurgh Podcast would be complete without a mailbag segment?

Is Tristan Jarry “the guy” now with Matt Murray north of the border?

What players will make the biggest impact with the Penguins this season?

And with Pittsburgh playing in a crowded and competitive Mass Mutual Division, what are the team’s greatest strengths to outmatch their competition?

All of these questions and much more was talked about during this episode. We hope you enjoy the first PensBurgh Podcast of 2021:
