The Penguins have reduced their training camp roster down to 27 players, assigning both defenseman Juuso Riikola and forward Michael Chaput to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the American Hockey League.

Both players will report to the AHL club’s training camp.

Riikola is in the second of a two-year contract signed with the team last year, while Chaput signed a two-way contract with the team over the summer.

In the Penguins final preseason tune-up game on Saturday, Chad Ruhwedel, Bryan Rust, Teddy Blueger, and Jason Zucker all chipped in goals for the team en route to a 4-3 overtime win over Columbus.

The team will have a scheduled day off tomorrow before getting back to practice on Monday.

They will then head south to Tampa, where they will face off with the 2-time defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

The game will kick off the season for the NHL and ESPN, the league’s new broadcast rights holder.
